BA (Hons) Digital Animation

Final Major Projects — Class of 2021

About the Programme

This programme introduces students to the technology and skills needed for employment in animation and related industries. Animation has continued to change dramatically: no longer solely Hollywood's domain, smaller independent companies from Europe, Africa, Mexico, and beyond now produce remarkable work thanks to the widespread availability of animation software.

The course emphasises innovative communication and sharp observational skills, preparing graduates for careers in character animation, background design, storyboarding, and visual development.

Animation has evolved far beyond the traditional studio model, and today's graduates enter a field rich with independent and international opportunity. The projects in this exhibition reflect that global shift, with students exploring diverse storytelling traditions and visual styles. From hand-drawn character work to experimental digital pieces, each submission demonstrates a command of both the technical craft and the creative thinking required to succeed in modern animation. The programme has encouraged these artists to push boundaries, developing original narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences while building the professional portfolios that will open doors in film, games, broadcast media, and beyond.

The creative process behind each animation begins with rigorous observation and research, skills that form the foundation of compelling visual storytelling. Students have engaged deeply with character development, learning how subtle gestures and expressions can communicate emotion and advance a narrative without a single line of dialogue. Background design and world-building also feature prominently, with many projects constructing immersive environments that ground their animated stories. This attention to detail, combined with a strong grasp of timing and movement, results in work that feels both polished and personal, reflecting the distinct artistic voices that have emerged from this cohort of talented graduates.

Beyond the screen, the skills developed through this animation programme translate into a wide range of creative careers. Graduates are equipped not only for character animation roles but also for positions in visual effects, motion graphics, previsualisation, and art direction across film, television, advertising, and interactive media. The collaborative nature of the course mirrors professional studio environments, preparing students to work effectively within creative teams. As the demand for animated content continues to grow across streaming platforms, gaming, and digital marketing, these emerging artists are entering an industry that values both technical versatility and original creative vision.
