After researching readymade art and appropriation art for my dissertation, I became fascinated with layers and the merging of textures within layers. The idea for my FMP began as a series of paintings, but then Covid19 struck and lockdown ensued. I found myself in an impossible situation, locked down with my children, their children and partners (eight people in my little three bedroom terraced house) so painting large canvases was definitely out of the question from the perspective of practicality. I decided to explore computer software through the theme of displacement. Using displacement mapping and the layering of textures to create these images, it was hoped that I could further develop my skills within the computer based art environment and continue with my initial body of research.

The series of images here explore the idea of the changing of orbits and the idea of becoming displaced through fate. The planet portraits show the merging of emotion and textural scarring due to fate in a subsurface modification, which merges materiality with the suggestion of anthropomorphic narrative (the idea of a planet waiting for something to happen). The surreal comet landscape shows a body that has finally come to rest after much displacement over a very long period of time, happy to finally get some rest and the surreal airship contains the analogue valves that power, not only the galaxies, but also everything in the universe, silently floating along mostly fuelled by the suggestion of a massive body of gas! The Images as a series are intended to show a certain level of peace and calm that happens just before the storm and so there is an anticipation of the possibility of impending doom, which cannot be paranoia due to the gathering of knowledge from past events.
