I am Michael Dear, a graphic designer and illustrator. I take inspiration from all aspects of art and design, from...

I designed a new look for existing logos for a group project while keeping the main elements of each logo, the instagram, twitter and Youtube is accompanied by a computer design that was then taken and used in our google internal communication booklet. My inspiration behind these designs was to develop these already exisiting logos with shapes, I felt a geometric pattern helped make these logos pop more and stand out from what they originally looked like.

I had to sell the typeface Optima to other designers so they would buy and use the typeface. The typography brief was the hardest brief for me as at the beginning I had no interest in type, however after I gained a respect and a guilty love for typography. I created a booklet to showcase the typeface on different types of paper, as graphic designers we have a constant use of paper with our work. I also created little information cards to go along with the booklet to give the designer a background on the typeface, I learned to love this project in the end and it gave me a new look on type which I believed help develop my skills as a designer.

I designed a book cover for Goodnight Mister Tom, with this I used photography and models to make the cover. My inspiration behind the cover was the fact that the authoer based both characters off characteristics of two types of tree, I found this little bit of background information fascinating and wanted to include it in my design. I believe little design choices like this really allow a design to link with its audience on the basis that you are willing to research the subject that they are interested in
and use little facts like this to influence your design.

Another set of designs I created were postcards that would be sold in the science museum, the concept of these postcards was simple; 10 great inventions of mankind. The design of each postcard would feature the invention itself such as the aeroplane and an abstract background linking itself to the foreground, on the aeroplane one for example the background is the most travelled airports around the world. Having those locations created this beautiful pattern that burst from point to point, this helped bring to life the postcard and gave it a more informational meaning behind it as well.

Lastly is my FMP which are designs of an environmental friendly air travel company, I chose to use the designs of the aeroplanes to represent this. Here are a few designs that the made up company could use on their aircraft, I went for a simple design so it wouldn't be so overwhelming as to detract from the logo.

Give this some love
