The title of my piece is “Society’s Asylum, as I wanted to look at the way society shapes and controls us in our everyday decisions without us knowing. I felt the idea that could best convey this concept was setting the piece in a metal institute, with the patience portraying the different aspects society can control us. The first section, with the tutting presents the idea how society influences the way we present ourselves, the pressure placed on us to fit this prefect image society tells us we should be.

The next section I used chains to communicate how society controls how we plan and evaluate our lives against key values society tells us we should have achieved ; have a good job, earn this amount, buy this car, buy this house. And how this can chain us to values to measures ourselves against. The movement in this section also reflects the way we restrict our selves to fit into these boxes and plans, moving in a very tight and upright manner. The third section has duets with the pairs being joined at the hip, with only one arm and leg being active. I used this to portray how society tells us to be like the next person, for us all to follow a certain look or way to behave- to fit the norm. And how if we do not live up to this or choose to be different society looks down on us. In the final duet I wanted to explore the idea how society controls our emotions and how we should feel and react at certain points, for this I used Krump since it is a very emotionally invested style. Overall, I feel my piece conveys a hidden message that some members of the audience may see, but that it is open to everyone to interpret, finding their own message and to enjoy the piece.
