I’m Ellie Gibbs and I’ve just finished studying animation at South Essex College and University. I have a passion for...

Kaiju is about two young boys living in Japan, they’re both huge fans of a kaiju show, and the animation starts with the two of them fighting over an action figure of one of the shows kaiju. The toy breaks from them both pulling on it and as both boys stand up from falling, the viewer's point of view shifts to the boy’s imagination where they have become their favorite kaiju from the series. One boy takes the form of Honsho, the raccoon-like kaiju. The other boy takes the form of Senshigani, the samurai crab kaiju. A fight breaks out between the two kaiju and we see them using their abilities to try and defeat one another, Honsho kicks Senshi into a building and as the two wrestle against each other a giant looming figure is seen in the background. Both kaiju turn to look at the figure as the viewer's POV switches from the boy’s imagination and back to the real world. We see the mum glaring down at the boys as she points towards the mess the two have made of their room. The animation ends with both boys looking at each other in shame.

Some of our inspirations were Godzilla, Promare and BNA (Brand New Animal). We looked at Studio Trigger for style inspirations because we wanted to mix 2D and 3D animation like they do in a lot of their productions.

Give this some love
