Hi, I am Darcie. As a recent interior design graduate, I am a keen and enthusiastic junior interior designer, eager...

Old Billingsgate, a breath-taking Victorian Grade II listed building located in the heart of the City of London, on the North bank of the River Thames, was once a world-famous fish market. Old Billingsgate has been converted to ‘The Old Marketplace’, a hybrid multifunctional building. This design created a new modernised market including a restaurant, bar, hidden sleeping pods and studio apartments. The market is designed to have a very modern and luxury look to add more class, taking main inspiration from Harrods food court whilst adding more quirky market stalls to create a fun and young atmosphere.

Main design concepts were inspired by the route the fish were transported to the market and the industrial materials used within the fish market. The fish were supplied by boats travelling up the River Thames and dropped at the docks outside Old Billingsgate.

Research shows people between the ages of 19-30 are unable to afford much more than small living spaces in London. Renting in London is one of the most expensive around the UK. Flats and apartments are small and do not have room for social events to be held. The studio apartments were designed to create an Instagramable space for young people to rent out with their friends for the day and night. Food can be ordered from the market using the iPad system fitted in the studios. Hidden sleeping pods include a small space for a bed and bathroom available for people to ‘camp’ out in for a night or two, this creates an unexpected and mysterious stay rather than just a simple night in a hotel. Not only can the people hiring the studio spaces stay here but also the London workers choosing to visit after work and tourists.
