My name is Countessa Taiwo Chaves-de-Campos. I am a black British female, born and raised in east London, I’ve got...

When creating this project the whole goal was to create a juxtaposition between the 90s action figures, and dolls so I looked at 90s Brats dolls (specifically by designer Hayden Williams) and 90s Action man (specifically the 1998 action man) originally I picked up these dolls because I liked the vibe they gave, in comparison to say a Barbie or a GI Joe doll. The Action man was adventurous cool, edgy, fun, playful and the rap star was completely the opposite it was sassy fierce sexy feminine so I thought it would be lovely to focus on certain 90 styled aspects, rework these but flip the concept on its head almost. Whereas instead of having the men be masculine, adventurous and fun and the women sexy, face sassy as they would be stereotypically I decided to play on this and l flip it so the men are going to be the Bratz dolls and the women are going to be the Action men. With this I tried to focus on some cool conceptual pieces for the women and the men I tried to focus on things that a little bit more simple a little more subtle a lot more relaxed in comparison. The print was my own design and had it made in China. I wanted there to be some form of unity within the whole collection and this was the print so when you look at the actual piece as you can see that flows through all of the garments with the women’s pieces it would be seen in the hood and the linings of the garments is a lot more subtle in women’s pieces whereas in the men’s piece as it stands out it’s there to be seen and admired. I feel like the whole collection is representative of the 21st-century and how the modern day influencer w

I started this piece with the thought that I wanted to create something that I believe would be timeless, urban and be something I could see a music artist wearing in the video shoot. When I was creating this look the artists that I had in mind is an Afro be artist named WizKid and I specifically thought of him whilst creating this piece because he is rather daring and fashion forward when it comes to wearing garments he’s not afraid of prints he’s not afraid of colour he’s not afraid of styles that haven’t been worn before. My aim was to combine simple and complex together in one outfit so I started looking into fabric manipulation and after some 3D experimentation the one I finally settled on is a form of manipulation called “shmocking”, specifically “lattice fabric smocking”.

My friend originally came to me needing some help for his project for the BBC he wanted me to create a garment for him to use on a show so we sat down and put a concept together. It started as he wanted it to be his name in lights, he wanted the garment to be rather simple and to have a lovely light texture to it. I used a satin and created is name in the a movie styled font on the back. It looks almost a little bit cliché but he loved the concept and final piece once it was brought to life.
