Hi, I am Abbey Light a recent BA (Hons) Interior Design Graduate. The sectors I am most interested in within...

Within this project, my intention was to create a concept/visual that expresses a new idea to the market by giving life to a sector that is almost forgotten about. I wanted to look at Leigh Library and the possibility of creating a potential chain throughout all libraries by providing a service run alongside the NHS whilst keeping the primary use of the building alive. The way in which I intend to re-tie the libraries primary job into this new concept is by having books in each room that relate to the space, for example; within the food workshops there will be cultural food books, vegan books, nutritional books etc.

The concept I created was to have the library showcase a workshop area for food which would allow stay at home parents, elderly, friends, family basically anyone to come to a place where they can learn how to cook and have fun with it. As well as offering a service to those who can’t always cook at home or struggle to, it means they can bulk cook some recipes and take them home with them or simply by coming in as and when they want to so they can take food home with them. This creates a fun and social environment for people, whereas those who may be at home by themselves or those who find it hard to cook etc can come somewhere they can enjoy to prep food and have the help they need.

Within Leigh-On-Sea, due to the accessibility from the train station, we know a high quantity of residents in this area commute to and from London/surrounding areas therefore the food workshop also allows family members/friends etc to make/prep food for those commuting and they can grab it on their way home when they may perhaps come to use the gym studio or the mindfulness room. During the time I was collecting research I observed supermarkets and realised a high quantity of people that were in uniforms (perhaps finishing work) always seem to take to microwave meals due to the easiness, so imagine have a meal pre-made/cooked for you that’s much healthier and/or nutritional that can be collected on your journey home or picked up once you’ve finished your gym or mindfulness class.

The gym space I intended to have more as a studio this is because modern gyms where there are a high quantity and variety of machines, free standing weights etc tend to create an environment where people don’t interact so by making it into a studio that’s focused mainly on classes allows it to be more social and interacting. There will be times the space isn’t occupied and therefore members can of course use the space willingly.

There will be a studio adjacent to the gym studio which will be focusing on mindfulness and will be a space for people to feel at ease and allow them to feel calm and passionate. The studio will offer classes for those who want to learn about the body the mind as well as looking, learning and helping mental health and the factors. There will also be a changing room and a shower cubicle located on this side of the 1st floor for those who may need it.

Having the NHS work alongside this concept means they can refer the public to the location whether it be for dietary reasons, health reasons etc. The concept will work in an almost membership way where you can pay for one session, whether it be for the gym, the food workshop or the mindfulness studio or you can have monthly/yearly subscriptions perhaps for those who like to meditate or need help making meals.
